See, I didn't even know the library system had DVDs. And was too stupid to ask. Passed on the Akira Special Edition and checked out Nightmare Before Christmas instead. Haven't seen it since it came out, which was back in 1993 according to IMDB. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Also didn't realize my neighborhood has a web site. They make it sound considerably more interesting than is actually the case.
The anti-Minnesota stuff is boring, isn't it? I'd stop, but it's all true. YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH.
Site hasn't been updated in the last few months, at least, as it still lists the sadly de-funked Loring Cafe under Fine Dining. That link goes to the site for the new location, in Dinkytown. But "Dinkytown Cafe" just doesn't have the same ring, you know?
The library there doesn't have anywhere near as extensive a video collection as the one in Uptown, although both curiously have Neon Genesis Evangelion tapes. . .
Want to know more? Save hours of time by reading ToastyFrog Thumbnail Theatres instead of actually watching NGE or Akira (although I hear the DVD has a new, better dub). Browse the Google Directory listing for Nightmare Before Christmas. Virtually wander Minneapolis with the Phototour. And leave me alone, I'm trying to watch a movie here.

I expect a full review when you're done, there. I'd express shock and dismay that you haven't seen the movie before now, but, y'know, my shock and dismay is all used up right about now.
Yep, really need to get that editor. . . Saw the movie in the theater back in '93, and loved it. But haven't seen it since then.
As opposed to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which my nephew had one of those odd obsessions for that kids get, and made us play every single time he visited.
Think I still have the whole film memorized.
My son has, thankfully, passed his Harry Potter obssession. We're no longer besieged with demands to watch the "kids kids kids." He's presently really really into Nightmare and Empire Strikes Back. Every day, he adds another layer of intricacy to the Dance Of Demanding That We Watch Jack And Sally NOW NOW NOW.
Hey, it works for me. We've managed to keep the house Barney-free so long. I remain hopeful that I'll only be subjected to watching things over and over again that I can stand even through four bazillion watchings.
Ha. Ha. Ha.
hahahaha. This is Monk's favorite movie, too. I watched it while I was in labor with him, and we watch it together frequently now.
I have a big crush on Jack. Something about all of the searching and dissatisfaction I guess. He's exactly my type of man.
Plus, I love how Sally has all of the answers, and no one freaking listens to her. *sigh*
pick up the santy claus
put him in a box
bury it for ninety years
then see if he talks!!
Hee!
Here we see another reason I remain childless.
"No, honey, if daddy has to watch Pokemon again, he's going to start killing people. You don't want daddy killing people, do you?"
"Will you start with Billy in my day care? Fucker keeps pulling my hair."
Garrity, of all the lines you could quote. . .you're evil. You know this, right?
I have never seen that film. Guess I'm going to have to rent it.
perhaps I should put in the soundtrack today followed with Music for a Darkened Theater vol. 1 and the really creepy last Boingo album.
Amd make my pumpkin jack dance.
"Something's up with jack, something's up with jack..."
oh my great guggamugga I was (am?) obsessed with this film.
The Soundtrack is wonderful if only for Patrick Stewart's extended narration of the story.
Layers, man, layers.
TNBC is one of my favorite films. The DVD transfer is flawless and the soundtrack is terrific.
*humming "Something's up with Jack. Something's up with Jack."*
Fox (my best friend) is obsessed with Jack Skellington to levels that scare even me. The TNBC picture next to her desk. the Jack Skellington boxers, poseable Jack, the statuettes, the Jack watch, the...
... I'm so jealous.
"I am the Who when you call 'Who's there?'
I am the wind blowing through your hair.
I am the shadow on the moon at night
filling your dreams to the brim with fright... "
Although, I do have to ask, because it's snuck into my brain every once in a while when I'm listening to Oogie Boogie's Song. Does Oogie Boogie seem a bit... stereotypical... to anyone else? Or is it just me? I'd really like it to just be me, that I'm putting shadows (ha) where there are none.
oogie is my least favorite character...and probably my least favorite song.
I don't know if he's stereotypical but he's really the least creatively thought out character.
ANd after awhile that song just bugs.
Did you intend to be punny, or was that just an accident?
its always intentional VA...even when its not.
That's how funny I am.
I agree about Oogie. His three little hatchetkids are far more menacing and creepy and horrid than he is (as is their Santy Claus tune). They rate on the "David Lynch Howling Fantod" scale for me, and Oogie's boring by comparison. Maybe that's because I know horrible little children like that exist in real life, whereas Oogie is just an anthropomorphic pillow.
So speaking of horrible little children, anyone here ever seen "Heavenly Creatures," and if so, how'd it ring for ya?
I own Heavenly Creatures. I saw it once, went out, and bought it. It fascinates me like a car crash, and strikes several deep chords in me. It must be horrible to be somewhere where you feel like that reaction is an actual solution to a problem, like it will solve something.
Worse, it's a true story.
I own TNMBC and its been my fav. movie since I was three (or u can say since 1993). I'm 13 and I still watch it evrey time I get. I LOVe Jack too. I think hes the best charecter out their. ..and hes my type of guy.lol. But anyway I love this movie.
And Oggie boggie is nothing but a pillow sheet filled w/ bugs. lol. I think his songs are boring.
My favourite movie!!!!!!!!!!
"well,well,well what have we here
sandy claws ,ha ? UUUUH!
I'm really scared!!!!"
I watched this movie 20 times or more on video. An all-time favourite.
I luvvveeddd the nightmare b for christmas. best disney movie of allllllllllllll time.
I didn't see it since I was 6 so I watched it with my little brother last nigh. Nice the kidnap Santa. For A Disney Movie I must say there is alot of guns and knife's in this movie...I juess that's why I like it. To bad my little brother is now obsessed with the movie. That and Harry Potter, I really don't mind watching the movie again but after watching it almost 6 times a day you get annoyed with it. I think I remember the whole movie now, My little brother wants me to Draw pictures for him all the time of the characters in the movie. (hope my brother stops yelling "what's this?, what's this?")
Do you want to buy a lifesize Jack Skellington?
Yeah, though I love the rest of the movie, Mr. Oogie Boogie comes across as a black racial stereotype to me, and that disappoints me. I feel the same way about the monkey tribe that steals Mowgli in the old Jungle Book movie.
Steff, thanks, but I really don't have anywhere to put something like that. . .
Nalo, I seem to have mercifully blocked out the monkey tribe. And I'm honestly not sure if I ever saw Song of the South or not; vaguely remember bits and pieces, but they might have been clips included in something else.
Quick Google for re-release dates brings up Snopes:
Which is really something I didn't need to see today. Which is why I'm sharing it.
I'd blocked out the monkey tribe too; or rather, saw the movie when I was so young that the racializing probably went over my head. But I was recently on a long plane trip, during which the double-header movies were "The Jungle Book" and Disney's "The Haunted Mansion," which managed to totally rewrite history. I'm going to do a blog/rant about them at some point, I think.
I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE GOT IT ON DVD LESS THAN A WEEK AGO, BUT I'VE WATCHED IT 37 TIMES TO BE EXCACT!!! IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE NAME, I'M ADDICTED TO IT. SPENT $70 ON THE MOVIE IN ONE PLACE!!!
This is one of those movies that makes you feel good to be a little Goth !
