To see with eyes unclouded by hate

Which is a bit difficult for me when I'm reading fucking Right Wing News.

It's Time For The GOP To Go After The Black Vote:

I've always thought that we in the GOP have not worked hard enough to pull in the black vote. That rational has always been "why spend all kinds of time and money trying to convince blacks to vote for us when we know that they're going to go 90/10 for the Democrats no matter what we do?"

[. . .] Most polling data I've seen seems to suggest that roughly 1/3rd of all blacks are Conservatives. It's crazy for them to be voting for anyone but the GOP and we need to work hard to show them that's the case and make them feel welcome in the party.

Uh-huh.

Reading the comments made me feel really welcome.

The problem is there is so much crap being fed to inner city blacks that our message is ignored.

Blacks as blacks see themselves as adversaries of civil society and look to big government to be their ally against the rest of us. It should not be this way, but it is. We may hope that conversion will occur one black man or woman at a time, but we cannot outbid the other side to pay off the professional black leadership. What could we possibly offer them? More affirmative action? Slavery reparations? There are no ducks to be hunted here.

I agree, even if the # of votes gained appears to be miniscule, quite a bit can be gained just by reducing black turnout and the effectiveness of Dem GOTV efforts.

Anyone want to tell me what GOTV stands for, by the way?

There's also a Trackback link from UnFossilized titled, "The GOP In The Ghetto?"

Because, you know, that's where those people live.

And again I say, I've lived too long.

GOTV = "Get Out The Vote". He's right about one thing, probably 1/3rd of black folks would self describe as (small c) conservatives, but most know better than to join up with the Republicans.

What does it mean when you've gone far beyond the point where you can even bear to pull up a link to read stuff like this knowing the effect it'll have on you, and instead you just want to bundle all the good folks up inside and say, "Sugar, have a drink on me?"

(And does she hit the link, read it anyway, and cringe, whacking herself in the head for reading it when she knew better? Why yes, she does.)

still chattel after all these years. Just moving from one party to the other when they deem us valuable enough.

See...White People Love Us.

"See...White People Love Us."

Jason, that was brilliant.

Marc, thanks. So at a time of declining voter participation, they're actively looking for ways to discourage even more people from actually going to the polls.

And then they wonder why I think they're evil.

Heather, I only visit places like that because if I only hung around here, I'd delude myself that there are only good folks, and set myself up for massive disappointment. . .

Jason, I missed any expressions of love in all that. Perhaps I should re-read the post and comments.

Or perhaps I should give myself a paper cut on the eye and pour lemon juice in it.

i forget where i read about this, (maybe the anti-war blog?) but in the last election, the day before, there were Republican campaign workers out in force in the inner city neighborhoods putting up signs that said "Get Out and Vote -- but first be sure you've paid up your child support, your parking tickets, your traffic violations, and most of all your WARRANTS". interesting tactic, yes?

Hey eye injuries are serious business. I should know me with the infected eye and all.

Re:"quite a bit can be gained just by reducing black turnout". How marvelously honest!

I actually did an item about GOP vote suppression in the most recent election.
http://www.backspace.com/common/20021111.html#n1

I link to some articles reviewing the history of nefarious GOP activities, including a TNR item that was quite good:
http://www.thenewrepublic.com/docprint.mhtml?i=20021111&s=judis111102

TNR also had a surprisingly good piece on the Bush family's failure to get black voters.

A swing by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies turns up its 2002 National Opinion Poll.

Hard data on real-live black folks' attitudes, for those partial to that sort of thing. And you can download a PDF.

Also, a scattershot selection of some of the Joint Center's older poll data.

Just to see how far Republicans still have to go to make their case.

And as for the flyers? J. Marshall at Talking Points Memo had a post on it and grabbed a copy of the flyer, probably from tpoh.org. MeFi discussion came in part from a Baltimore Sun article.

If my post had been about the white vote and I jokingly titled it 'The GOP in the Trailer Park' I'm pretty sure nobody would care. I would recommend a chill pill.

How much would you like to put down on that?

Joshua, thank you. Your recommendation has been noted.

You can fuck off now.

Awww Aaron -- I said we need to make Conservative blacks welcome and we both know you aren't Conservative....But if it'll make you feel better, I'll save you a seat at the next GOP convention if you get mugged or decide your taxes are too high between now and then.

Also, if it's any consolation, I don't support doing anything illegal to lower turnout. But on the other hand, I'm always rooting for a low Democrat turnout and a high GOP turnout and It's just reversed for most Democrats. So if 91% of blacks vote the same way in 2004 that they did in 2000, yeah I'm rooting for a low black turnout. Just like you'll be hoping that the military & Christian Conservatives don't turn-out. It's just different sides of the same coin...

Anyway, have a happy turkey day..

PS: I'm still jealous of that "The Fucking White Oppressor" tag beside of Town Hall. I betcha those guys never show up and respond to your posts so why do they get the link and the cool tag?

Dearest Joshua [if you reappear],
Yes, "GOP in the Trailerpark" would annoy some of us.
I, for example, might think you were trying to take advantage of my sainted great-auntie, or my sainted auntie, or...[I have a rather large family, which no doubt doesn't surprise you.]
Yes, do fuck off.

Thank you, Mr. John Hawkins, as everyone knows, victims of violence automatically become Republican.

Do check in with us when you've got some sort of intelligent response, won't you?

Gee...I suppose if our government was actually representational we would all wish for 100% voter turnout, as that would be the only real way of assessing what the people want.

Of course, first we'd actually have to find candidates who are interested in representing PEOPLE and not CORPORATIONS.

If people would take their heads out of their asses and learn to calm down they might learn a thing or three. In all actuality that trackback ping was done wrong as I meant to trackback to the original post. Such is the curse of insomnia-posting.

Also, before I so lovingly 'Fuck off' (hostile much?) I would like to point out that not only does much of my family come from the trailer park, but I've also family who are 'those people'.

I'm thinking that Joshua extolling his trailer park roots is a very obfuscated way of asking you to bust up a chiffarobe and like it.

John, I've had far more problems with the police than with muggers, possibly because the former see the black skin and assume I'm the latter.

I've also known too many people from countries which have real high taxes to complain about mine, but their money goes for odd indulgences like health care, education, decent roads. . .

And I'm all for the military voting. Voted absentee from boot camp in '88 myself, since, unlike most warbloggers, I was actually in the military. How about you?

Joshua, why don't you, David Horowitz and Glenn Reynolds all get together one day and talk about how you have family members who are "those people." Maybe you'll impress each other, because you're sure as hell not convincing me of anything by mentioning it.

"if it's any consolation, I don't support doing anything illegal to lower turnout."

Consolation? Actually, I'm not consoled that you're not rooting for criminality. Would you like to up the ante to actually having some enthusiasm for democracy, since you're so interested in consoling me?

And re:war-bloggers and bootcamp, sorry to plug something on my site again, but a friend of mine is a CO to this war, and I put up something he wrote on my site:
http://www.backspace.com/common/20021125.html#n2

Drapetomaniac, plug away. I edited your URLs to actual links; hope that's ok.

George, have I thanked you lately for the serious link action? I'm rude like that sometimes. Thanks.

On a sort of related note, a friend of mine ended up hosting a comments discussion about whether the GOP is good for black people on his blog this week. It's educational. (My comment included the word "patronizing".)

Please do not hold the blog owner responsible for assholes who post in his comments section. The original post only touches on black voting patterns, and, since I know the blog owner (he's a friend and neighbor), I can tell you he didn't mean to start anything.

Who really makes my eyes get all hardboiled is the good Dr. Rice up in the White House with her "I could never vote Democratic because they wouldn't let my father vote" says a woman who works to advance the party of Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms, or perhaps she hasn't seen a paper since they jumped the aisle?

Disingenuity doesn't really serve people who are supposed to be historians.

Ginger, thanks. I'd mention to John that that line, "It's crazy for them to be voting for anyone but the GOP" sounds just a wee bit patronizing, but that seems to be how he talks about and to the lesser races.

No wonder they love him at LGF.

Julia, I haven't quite figured out the terminology switches between "conservative vs. liberal" and "Democrats vs. Republicans" that conservative Republicans engage in so much. I think they just use whichever is most convenient at the time.

George, which great man said that? I should attribute my quote of him.
