Ok, this one gets the fake-ass time stamp
Anyway, so.
It occurs to me that I have a) a cell phone with no roaming chages, b) a laptop with a WiFi card, c) a list of free hotspots thoughout this great land of ours and d) a hell of a lot of free time in the near future.
And also no relationship, no pet, not even houseplants to water.
I'm thinking road trip.
I'm also thinking working during road trip, if anyone knows a legit work-from-'home' type biz, or something that doesn't require that 20-century physical presence thang.
Failing that, there's a list of very cool online classes offered by Manpower, which I could take from pretty much anywhere.
Go on road trip, spend part of the time inside taking class, come back with certification. Seems reasonable to me, but I may be hopped up on coffee, Red Bull and Mountain Dew again.
Any suggestions? Questions? Comments? BitPass contributions to the road trip fund?
Update: Oh, right, Paypal donations also gratefully accepted, and I think I had an Amazon honor system account set up at one point. I just really want BitPass to work out, since the micropayment thang seems like the Wave of the Future™.
But filthy lucre is filthy lucre. I'm flexible.

I hear texas is nice this time of year...and there are lots of free wifi spots in Austin.

I'd suggest Brooklyn/NYC for a stopover, but it's expensive and I'm literally already sleeping on the extra couch.
I'll hit BitPass in a bit.

Second what Dru says. And many of the free wifi spots serve really excellent coffee, if that helps.

Coffeeshop that my friend manages has free access [sorry- no sleep, no food- so "wi-fi" just makes me giggle right now].

You're always welcome in Denver.

lizard, I'm straight-edge.
Oh, stop laughing, you lot.
Dru, Karin, I'd really like to meet both of you in person at some point, and have heard Good Things about Austin, so I look forward to seeing you at the airport when my flight arrives.
Note: flight. Because my black ass ain't driving through the rest of Texas.
For a start, I couldn't resist the temptation to fill the trunk with dildoes.
Ronn, no worries. And that's a bit further than I was planning on going, and in the wrong direction.
It's winter. I go south.
Neo, Columbus is slightly south of here.
goneaway, thanks. Doubt I'll make it there in this spur-of-the-moment thang, but someday. I can fly from Denver to Austin, right, and leave the car at your place?

You definitely don't want to drive through East Texas (that's where Vidor is). Or West, because it's totally empty. Or ...
Okay, well, driving anywhere in Texas other than the Dallas/Houston/Austin/SA quadrangle generally sucks, actually, especially when Driving While Not White. Although if you stick to the interstates and move fast (just not too fast), it's not so bad.

ROFL @ straight edge. Big black "X" tattooed on the back of both of your hands Aaron?

aaron, what you describe here sounds like heaven. all you need is a crappy white chevrolet van, some guitars amps and drums, and a couple of extra miscreants, and you have yourself a punk rock tour. indeed, if you have an instrument, you might want to consider doing a coffeehouse tour. you will then doubtlessly say something like "but i can't play/sing/write songs/etc." to which i would reply, "So?"
ROCK ON DOUBLE METAL HORNS DUDE --
happy 2004!

Crash space available in So Cal, if you make it out here.
Posted by: Kynn Bartlett | January 1, 2004 12:03 PM
so you could always crash at my place, lord knows my roommates don't have any frieds - let alone girlfriends - but the couch is always open... too bad it's only a few el stops north of your place...

The capital of the confederacy awaits you.
OK, OK, there are other things to recommend our current locale. The weather is rather pleasant here, for January . . .

garrity, thanks. I think.
Do I have to paint the Stars & Bars on the side of the Focus? Or at least take out the "He's Not My President" sticker from the back window?
getofab, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single El stop. Or something.
Kynn, thanks. Will you do me a favor and remind me about the Static Shock/Batman Beyond crossover, so I don't miss it and have to come crawling to you or Dwayne for a video later?
Rocka, thanks for the kind words. Don't think I've seen all of Season 3, come to think of it. . .
r@d@r, guess I could do Kate Bush covers, accompanied by backing tracks from the laptop.
uppity-shinob, I'll have you know I have "Hate" on one hand, and, um, "Mo' Hate" on the other.
Karin, I loves you like a stepsister, but I repeat, not driving through Texas.

Naw, we have plenty of lefties here; stars-n-bars and love-it-or-leave-it stickers not required, although not precisely uncommon, either. But they have to compete with the Northern Sun bumper stickers. It's freaky. This is really the southern end of the East Coast Megalopolis (read: Sprawl.) You're as likely to run into a New York accent as a drawl.
Also, we will practice up on really fabulous vegan Afghani cooking.
