Way I see it, there's two reactions to that. "Huh?" and "Auugh! Bad 80's music flashback! Get out of my mind! GET OUT OF MY MIND!!"
Obviously, I'm going for the latter.
It's Michele's fault, really. She's the one doing 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee entries. Causing me, in my not quite awake/sobered up state, to try to remember if Prince's extremely sucky, monosylabic interview back in the day was with Don Cornelius on Soul Train or Dick Clark on American Bandstand. So, hit TV Tome for a list of guests from Soul Train (not sure the official site even has such a thing), and hit season 12, 1982, featuring among others The Time performing that little ditty from the title, and Vanity 6 with "Nasty Girl." Oh, and The Dells popped up here and again, if you check the list.
I'd point to an exact link, but after the multiple references to (among others) Teena Maria, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Shalamar, DeBarge, Whodini, The Fat Boys. . . I'm kind'a in nostalgia meltdown mode right now. Sorry.
This is also preventing me from writing about the very entertaining but damn they need a bigger space Blogger Reading last night. But, oddly, I'm fairly certain someone else with a blog will do so.

The practically wordless interview that Prince did was with Dick Clark on "American Bandstand" -- which was replayed in its entirety when VH1 was in "American Bandstand" rerun mode a few years back.
At one point, Clark asked a question requiring a numerical answer, and Prince held up his fingers!
All me & my friends have been talking about is how now that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame time of eligibility has hit the 1980s, what a dearth of nominees there's going to be--well, dearth of seemingly worthy nominees. I loved the British synth-pop that seemed to take over--as you'll well remember!--but I never had any illusions that it was particularly meaningful. The first few years we'll probably see leftover 1970s people who couldn't make it in before (like KISS, probably). But then after that--?? Who gets nominated, Duran Duran?? Flock of Seagulls? Human League?? Scritti Politti?! I can see Madonna going in--the only member of The Eighties Triumvirate yet to be inducted, along with Michael Jackson and Prince. And maybe Cyndi Lauper. I guess Sting will get in as a solo act (The Police were inducted last year). George Michael (with but most likely without Wham)? Luther Vandross? Anita Baker? Tears for Fears? Wang Chang?? The Go-Gos? The Bangles? DeBarge?? New Edition? The Time?? Def Leppard?? Oh, and that kinda brings us to the 80s hair metal bands! Bon Jovi! Cinderella! Ratt! And the slew of bands that came after that, from mighty Metallica to pop-metal Poison.
The 1990s aren't much better, although that's a long way off. Sure, we can talk about Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, but the 90s are also the time of New Kids on the Block, Vanilla Ice, and Milli Vanilli!
And don't forget MC Hammer!
This should be a frighteningly fascinating next few years...

Oh man, I couldn't disagree with you more about this song. I went nuts when I heard it for the first time on the radio today. That synth line is so perfect! and the programmed (?) drum flourishes too.

That song is actually pretty good.
