Well, unless we wanted to debate whether or not that's a Gen X credo.
&, perhaps, it could be said that I'm "commandeering" this space for my own nefarious purposes.
B/c really, when all's said and done, I really just want your thoughts about Gen X & Gen Y writers, artists, musicians, whatnot.
B/c my students just rolled over and died on this exercise earlier this week, & it's left me sad. "Am I wrong," I think, "for believing that there are many of us Gen Xers out there being fabulous and talented, & Gen Y kids too?"
[&, no, I do not believe, as someone suggested to me, that they were all cleverly self-referentially enacting "slack"- I think they just couldn't think of anything, didn't do any research, and didn't take me up on my offers of help. & now their grades have suffered appropriately.]
So- plug yourself, your friend, your fav comic artist, band, performance group, whatever, but help me walk in there next week w/a list as long as my arm of workin scensters born between 1960-1980, and 1980-2000.

Everything ever done by Kevin Smith. I don't know if you're admitting film in the course, or sticking to print, but *Clerks* is a gen-X classic and no mistake.

I'd suggest Colson Whitehead, author of The Intuitionist and John Henry Days. Think he falls into the Gen-X timeframe, but ain't up to the (minimal) research to confirm that.
And Margaret Cho, of course. Preston Klik, of Big Hat, My Scarlet Life, and various & sundry fame, maybe?

I bet if you were to plop down in front of a VH-1 "I Love the 70s/80s" marathon, you'd get good & plenty grist for the mill.
I can name a couple people..the ones I think of are not necessarily entertainers in the way that you ask:
-Michael Jordan
-Princess Diana of Wales
All the rest I can think of (Michael Jackson, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Prince, The Rolling Stones, are Baby Boomers!)
Anyway...here's a list of some famous Gen-X-ers, some of which you've probably already come up with(?)

Neo, no worries. Brain's finally kicking in, I think; forgot to mention Joss Whedon (born in '64), and I just posted that song from Fiona Apple a few weeks ago.
Oh, and there's this obscure little singer/songwriter from Buffalo, NY. Think she runs a label too or something.
