It is possible to do the renfest thing as a mundane, you know. I did it in Texas for years. My husband used to work in the company at TRF, so he has real garb, but I'd much rather go as a mundane than in a half-ass costume.

"The dreads really don't scream historical accuracy, do they?"

NH: Depends on whose history, yes?

Ginger, sounds like a plan. Or I just like the idea of being a mundane instead of one of the freaks for a change.

Nalo, good point. Have you ever been to a RenFair?

No. Peter S. Beagle's novel _Folk of the Earth and the Air_ is the closest I've ever gotten, and was immensely grateful to discover that he'd included a black Prester John among the attendees at the fair.

There's a black character (who is either on staff or a regular attendee, because I see him every time I go) at TRF who has sort of a fantasy chainmail costume. He's very impressive and is one of the few standouts I notice every year. The company and the regulars in costume are a pretty pale crowd for the most part, with the exception of some of Katherine of Aragon's Spaniards.

There are faeries and goths and all sorts of fantasy costumes at TRF; it's not all historical. I used to know a guy who was involved with Scarborough Faire up near Dallas--until he sued them, which is another story--who laughed at how bad the costumes at TRF. Then I finally hauled my butt up to Scarborough, and I was Not Impressed. I just personally wouldn't want to do a fantasy costume, and I don't want to lay out the money for a good historical one.

Come to Austin and have cake with Dru!
