Part of the problem is going off on tangents, like the one I'm very kindly sparing you on how one (well, me) rarely sees abate, in comparison to the fairly common unabated, and isn't it interesting that the inflected/negated form is more common than the bare stem-y thingee, and. . . ok, I didn't spare you all of it, but trust me, it could have been worse. Oh so very much worse.
