This is the Hardest Thing I've Ever Had to Write

This is Val, Aaron's sister. My family and I are still working out what we wanted to say and do on the site. But at this time, however briefly, I thought it was best to confirm that yes, Aaron did pass away. We found out for certain yesterday. Please write me at val at valsadie.com or valsadie at aol.com for information on the funeral arrangements.

You don't know me at all, but my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

It's a hard thing to read, too. If not nearly so hard as to write. I only knew him through his writing, but that's enough to miss him something fierce.

My deepest condolences to your family. I also only knew Aaron through his writing, and I will still miss him very much.

Val, God bless you and yours. I only knew Aaron from his words; we went back and forth with each other. I'm so, so sorry.

I have visited this site a few times, and marveled at the beauty of Heathers photo's of Aaron, and want to say even though we are strangers I feel the tug of my heart at such a sad loss. Know that there are many out there, whom this has touched deeply today. I find myself sad even though I have never spoke to Aaron.....my thoughts and prayers are with your family. He is at peace, and a place where all is calm.....

I only knew Aaron through this site, but I will say that his wit and politics have been an inspiration. My prayers go out to you and your family.

I had the chance to meet Aaron in Chicago in June, and have just heard this terrible news. Val, I am so, so sorry, my heart goes out to you.

I, like so many others who have written here, did not know Aaron personally...I only knew him through his writing. I'm so saddened to know that the world has lost such a brilliant and good soul. I send my heartfelt prayers to your family and all of Aaron's friends, though I wish there was more I could do. Please keep us posted as to any arrangements and memorials for Aaron. I know I for one would be happy to donate to something that was important to him.

I met Aaron with Rachel in Chicago. Val, I'm so sorry.

I've been visiting this site for a couple years, only ever posted once. I have often thought, "How happy it makes me that there are people like Aaron in the world." Well, there is one less now.

My condolences to his family. I will always remember him.

My deepest condolences to you and your family, Val. I hope you take some small comfort in the fact that Aaron's writing was read and enjoyed by a lot of folks; you can see just by this thread how many people he touched and inspired. He will be greatly missed.

My condolences to his family and friends. I only knew Aaron through his words here but I too will miss him.

I am so sorry to see Aaron gone. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with all family and friends.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Val. My sympathies to you and your family.

My condolences to the Hawkins family. I haven't been online much the past 2/3 months, so I was shocked to find out today about Aaron.

I so regret not making the trip to Chicago this past June. There were plans for about dozen of us bloggers to meet during Juneteenth. Once that fell through, I thought about meeting Aaron during the most recent BEA.

He'll be missed tremendously.

I went to high school with Aaron at Crete-Monee High for a year before moving back to Chicago. We used to hang pretty tight for a while watching Dr.Who and reading comics. I live in Japan now and I found this site a few months ago by Googling his name. I send condolences to the family. This cat was way cool. My heart goes out.
Sam

My condolences to your family.

I, like many others, have been an avid reader of this site. I only know your brother by his writing.

May ask, what happened? I feel like I'm coming into the middle of the story, that I'm missing a part of the narrative. How? Why? Where?

Sorry, just want to know.

Incredibly sorry to find this out. My sympathies.

I'm so sorry. Your brother was a wonderful writer.

I am so very sorry for your family's loss. Aaron will be missed.

My condolences to the family :(

My deepest sympathy goes out to you and to yours. The Internet will miss Aaron.

I am so, so sorry. My condolences to your family. I never met Aaron in person, though I thought it would only be a matter of time. I am mourning tonight for someone who I only knew as pixels on a screen; I can only imagine what you who knew him all his life must feel.

Oh my. I was also a reader. And he will be missed greatly. I am so, so sorry.

This is a real stunner. Aaron was too funny to die.

Please accept my condolances.

I just found out about Aaron's Diary.. and am soo saddened by this news. My prayers are with all of his family and all of his dear friends and hope that his life will be celebrated in the Great Heaven's of Life! Hugz n Lub, Bebe da FairyGodMum

RIP Aaron

I'm sorry to hear that. An inspired mind who will be missed, obviously, by many. I'm glad I had a chance to share in his gifts.

I first started reading Aaron's weblog a year or two ago and I was always in awe of his writing, biting and sarcastic as it could be. I'm very sorry to hear he passed away and my condoleances go out to his family and friends.

He will be missed

I didn't know Aaron personally, but I am friends with and work with his sister Karen. My heart goes out to the Hawkins family along with many prayers. May God give you all strength during this difficult time.

We all love you Karen...

i can only imagine what you're going through, but i know i want to help in any way i can.

Val,

You have the condolences of my family.

God Bless your family.

Joel Gaines

My deepest condolences to you and your family.

To Val, and to all of Aaron's family and friends, I am so sorry for your loss. I miss him more than I would have thought possible for someone I communicated with entirely through a computer. Nalo put it very well. I'm crushed by what's happened, but I know your pain must be so much greater. Perhaps it could provide some small consolation to know that Aaron was loved and appreciated by so many in the blog world, including me. As Laura said, it always made me feel better to know someone like Aaron was out there, and I feel the loss of him greatly. He will be remembered fondly by many for a long time to come.

Aaron seemed like a great guy. My condolences for you and my family.

Karen and Family, I am very sorry to hear this sad news. I didn't know Aaron, however I work with his sister Karen and I know her character to be terrific. It sounds like he was blessed with a great spirit and gift. Please accept my condolences.

God bless your family

My condolences to the family and his friends.

Aaron lived...I'll keep you posted

I'm so sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in my prayers.

I am very sorry for your loss. G. Cornelius is right and now I have to go beat up on David Anderson.

All my sympathies to you, your family, his friends.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Rest in Peace Aaron...a Crete Monee attendee

Words are so inadequate at a time like this. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you.

Though I've never met Aaron, we had the same friends and emailed several times - we had a lot of the same interests and I was always impressed with his writings. He will be dearly missed. He's touched a lot of lives.

My condolences to you and your family, I know it's hard. My prayers are with you.

I add my sympathies here for you and your family, Val. You have our emails--if there is anything I can do or help with from "out here," let me know. I'm sure that goes for the others too. Again, I am so, so sorry.

I will pray for you and your family during this hard time. I never met Aaron in person, but if there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Val,

My condolences to you and Aaron's family - my prayers are with you.

The blogging community that Aaron was so passionate and engaged in, is more than sitting in front a computer screen. As you can see, a man of such wisdom, wit and intellect as Aaron can touch the lives of more people than the average human will meet in a lifetime.

It blows your mind that so much can pour out of just one man. Not an average, ordinary man - only Aaron.

Me'shell N'degeocello once signed an autograph for me, 'Life Is A Gift'.

No doubt, Aaron took full advantage.

TCF

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Val. I'm so very sorry.

My sincere condolensces to you and your family; my prayers are with you all.

May the passing of time and your memories
soften your loss.
He is deeply missed.

This is so terrible. I got to know him through the site and through chatting. We has some incredible exchanges and he helped me through a lot of things that he'll never know about. Incredible sadness and condolences.

Aaron will be missed by all of us here at Wireless Ink.

Wow. As an Australian, I only visited this site occasionally. But I've got tears in my eyes as I post this, and I hope you're all okay.

Vale the Uppity Negro.

Damn. Damndamndamndamndamndamn.

I really, really like Aaron. I can't believe he's gone. I'm shattered. I know it is worse for the family, and you have my condolences. I'm just some idiot on teh intarweb.

But he will be sorely, sorely missed by me. I'm so sorry for your loss.

--Kynn

There are only a few really really really great blogs. This was one of them. I can only assume that the real man was just as cool. My heartfelt sympathies to all friends and family..

I'm sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you.

Val,
I started reading Aaron's words because he was given love on someones blog. I am so glad that I got a chance to share a little bit of him. My condolences to you and your family.

I wish I knew something to say that would be a comfort to Aaron's family and friends. Or to folks like me, who barely knew him at all (and only through the net). Strangers like me are so much richer because we got to know Aaron through his blog; and so much poorer because we won't be able to do that anymore.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about this. My heart goes out to you and the rest of Aaron's family.

I feel so sad. Without ever having met him, I knew him as a member of my tribe. He made me laugh. This is a terrible loss to the blogosphere. I want this not to be true.

Aaron's is a story that shouldn't have been interrupted. Can an absence weigh heavily? That's what it feels like.

My best wishes to you and your family in this awful time.

I was fortunate enough to meet Aaron earlier this year. He was quiet yet sharply funny. I will miss his writing, his wit, and his presence.

My deepest condolences to Val and Aaron's family. The world is a lot less interesting without Aaron in it.

I am so sorry for your loss...Will be thinking of you all.

Val,

My condolences to you and your family. What a horrible tragedy. I'm so, so sorry. I've read Aaron's blog for a couple of years, commented under a different name (my own), though usually I just read, and nodded, and didn't comment. But I was there, and I really admired his voice.

He'll be terribly missed.

I was saddened to hear about Aaron's death. My sincere sympathy to his family and loved ones. His passing is a huge loss for all of us. My thoughts are with you.

Damn. Aaron was such a passionate and witty guy, a true curmudgeon (a friend of mine defined a curmudgeon as "someone who loves the world more than the world loves itself"), and a fine writer. His work enriched many lives. Deepest sympathies.

My deepest condolences to Val and other members of Aaron's family.

The thing I most admired about Aaron was that he was uncompromisingly himself. There are a lot of white hypocrites in the blogosphere (some are on this thread) who try to get bloggers of color to echo them. When we refuse to do that, they abuse us. We are supposed to exist only on their sufferance. Aaron was well aware of what was going on. Still, he maintained his independence.

I've posted an entry in memoriam at Silver Rights.

My prayers will be with his family tonight. I've been coming to the site over the summer and I was impressed with Aaron's passionate writing. Never commented but now I wished I did. R.I.P Aaron

Suicide is a cowardly act.

Fucking tourists. Grow the fuck up.

I don't know what to say that hasn't been said already. I'm....stunned. My heart goes out to you and your family, Val. And I know that I'll miss his words.

I wish you all the strength and peace in the world. I didn't even know that i knew Aaron until i made the connection through other friends online.

Be well and take care of each other.

i am sorry for your loss.

*Some of the most wonderful people are the ones who don't fit into boxes.* Tori Amos

I corresponded a fair amount with Aaron when I started blogging a couple of years ago, and though we disagreed on many issues, we connected on music and he was very encouraging in general and said writing is more important than ideology. I am just stunned by this - his humanity, honesty, and often brilliant writing will be deeply missed. I am very very sorry.

I'm so deeply sorry to read this. My sympathies to all of Aaron's family and friends.

I have been reading Uppity Negro for a while now and consider myself a big fan. I even got to know Aaron a little bit thanks to his participation in online communities and social networks. I can only imagine what a wonderful friend or partner he must have been to those close to him.

Aaron's sense of social justice, intelligence, wit, and unique perspective helped make the world a better place for those of us who read him. I know he will be sincerely missed by all his devoted readers.

I just heard about you the loss of Aaron H like a lot of people I did not know the man, but as I can see by posting he touched so many lives. I can only offer condolences to you Val and all your family.
Please know that he is in Gods hands now and will be well taken care.

Rich G

My condolences to Aaron's family and friends. The world has lost a gift that cannot be recaptured.

So, so, so sorry.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Aaron's passing. I did not know Aaron personally, but I work closely with his sister, Karen. Aaron sounded like a great person with a wonderful gift. My heart and prayers go out to the Hawkins family during this difficult time.

With deepest sympathies,
Lynn Davis

I didn't know him, and I have visited the site only a few times, but clearly he had an impact on a lot of people. RIP, Aaron, and my condolences, Val, other family, SO, and friends.
