Ain't No Future In the Past (reprise)
Spring 2003 will see the publication of a book by Patricia Meili, the previously-anonymous jogger beaten and raped in New York's Central Park on April 19, 1989.
You can thank Elombe Brath's two-part article at The Black World Today for that little bombshell.
After a month of investigation, it was reported on Tuesday, June 11, on Fox TV and in the New York Times that a convicted rapist and murderer, Matias Reyes, serving 33 1/2 years years to life for the rape and murder of one woman and the rape of several others, has confessed that he was also the person who raped the jogger in the infamous Central Park case that nearly tore this city apart 13 years ago.
The article goes into DNA evidence, entrapment, and the kind of shoddy policework we've all come to know and expect. It does not touch on the issue of crime victim's rights, such as anonymity, but there are other places you can find information on that if you wish.
This is about whether men were convicted of a crime they didn't commit. The story has race, class, sex, crime and a nationally-known event. And there are very few public figures who would not want the whole thing to go away, unnoticed.
Welcome to the real world.
