Here's the surprising thing, though
So, a moron Michigan State Representative manages to speak around the foot in his mouth long enough to be heard uttering:
"I do feel that people traditionally feel more comfortable with representation that matches their beliefs and persuasion," [State Rep. William] Callahan said Tuesday.
In an interview Monday with The Associated Press, Callahan, a Catholic from St. Clair Shores in Macomb County, said [his primary opponent] Levin's religion wasn't an issue when he represented Oakland County, which has a large Jewish population.
But under reapportionment, most of the district's voters are Christians from Macomb County, Callahan said.
"I mean, that man has never owned a Christmas tree. He's not a Christian. And I'm thinking, `Jeez, how can he represent me then?"' Callahan said Monday.
He also said, "I really feel that in order for somebody to represent you, they should be pretty much like you, and Mr. Levin is not."
My first thought upon seeing this, of course, was that Callahan must be a brother. White folks are usually much better at disguising their anti-Semitism.
Checked his site at HouseDems.com (which I cannot link to directly, for some reason; look under Members), and nope. Which is something of a relief. Nice to see stupidity still unites all the races in hatred of the Other. No, the other Other.
Stacey Wacknov once told me that one of the advantages of being (visibly) black over being (non-obviously) Jewish is that you don't hear most of the truly offensive shit people spew, as your presence alone is enough to reign in all but the most clueless.
Luckily, there is no race in cyberspace.
So you get to read it all instead.
Um, it's raining, so it's overcast, causing my Seasonal Affective Disorder to kick in again. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
Update: I am a thieving bitch. Link/story courtesy of Metafilter, where the discussion includes another interview from the Detroit Free Press. Come back Nelly Min, all is forgiven.

**WARNING** ABSOLUTELY NO RELEVANCE TO ANYTHING YOU'VE EVER SAID!!
On one of those "blind date" type shows my wife likes to watch recently, one of the dates went badly. The man absolutely hated the woman they set him up with, and at the end, he spouted off, "I'm a mushroom cloud layin' mother******".
If you don't know by now, you better ax somebody.

So *that's* what happens when you work from home.
A cautionary tale for us all, friends.
