Pretty damn infrequently asked questions

So, the vegetarians among us may have noticed that non-Japanese Asian restaurants usually list "bean curd" on the menu, instead of using the known-to-everyone term "tofu".

Same stuff, but tofu sounds better. Bean curd is not a name that gets your taste buds tingling.

So why use two words instead of one?

SILENCE BROKEN: KOREAN COMFORT WOMEN, airing Thursday, May 18, 2000, 10:00 p.m. ET (check local listings), recalls one of the most disturbing consequences of the Asia/Pacific War. Highlighted by dramatized storytelling, the documentary focuses on Korean women who were forced to serve the Japanese imperial soldiers as sex slaves, euphemistically referred to as "comfort women."

During the war, Japan institutionalized sexual slavery on a massive scale, ostensibly to prevent venereal disease and the disablement of fighting men. Drafted from Japans pre-war colonies and a wide range of occupied territories, the estimated number of comfort women is roughly 200,000. Korea was the single major source.

Oh, who can fathom the minds of inscrutable Orientals?

Here in the logical West, we would never do such a thing. Well, until recently, when political correctness started running amok and stuff.

Anyone else serve liberty cabbage over the 4th?

The film is airing tonight on one of my local PBS affiliates. Hit the link to, as they say, check your local listings.

Update: Almost forgot, Fucking White Oppressor Eric S. Raymond recently weighed in on the whole vegetarian thang, noting:

I've always had to suppress a tendency to laugh rudely when vegeterians touted their diet as "natural". Vegetarianism is deeply unnatural for human beings; it's marginally possible in warm climates only (there are no vegetarians in Tibet because the climate kills them), and only possible even there because we're at the near end of 4,000 years of breeding for high-caloric-value staple crops.

Yep, no vegetarians halfway-up the fucking Himalayas. Nor in neighboring China, or in India, or Nepal, or, moving a bit further afield, Vietnam. No, vegetarianism is a creation of the affluent, decadent West, not found in any other country or culture.

And to think. Conservatives get upset when I call them fuckheads.
