With Phil Hartman as JiJi

Don't suppose I can use the Janeane Garofalo connection to persuade you to pick up the Disney dub of Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service? Uphill battle, going against the cartoons-are-for-children crowd, the all-dubs-suck anime/foreign film purists, the Disney-are-evil people. . . ok, them I agree with, but make an exception here. More info at been-online-since-you-were-a-gleam-in-your-daddy's-eye Nausicaa.net (umlauts, shmoomlauts), which just added a link to the North American release poster for Spirited Away.

Name-dropping Janeane is a convenient way of determining if someone is worth bothering with. Anybody who likes her can't be all bad. Anyone who doesn't like her probably isn't going to care for me, either. People who have no clue who she is are either pathetically out of touch with contemporary popular culture, and therefore won't understand half of what I'm saying (hi, Jeff!), or, well, children:

I am so irrelevant to the average Britney Spears fan. So it's not like what I do has an impact, really, on anyone. I think for a brief window in time, maybe, like I said, in the early to mid-'90s, maybe there was a little, minor impact I might have had on some younger women. But now, Grandma 36-year-old... I don't think the average MTV viewer knows who I am, nor would they care. I think I am incredibly irrelevant to the average young person.

Or so Herself said in an interview with The Onion A.V. Club last October. I have neither the time nor inclination -- ok, just not the inclination -- to see if this provoked a storm of outrage on the Britney fansites, as the easily misled interpreted this as dumpy-old-woman slamming their beloved pop tart.

Perhaps I shouldn't be so hard on Jeff. After all, don't think I'd know Britney if she walked up and asked her bodyguards to rough me up. My usual reaction to pop tarts is to ask the person next to me, "So, which one is that, then?"

Would love to argue that there's a difference between pop culture and corporate crap, but it would just end up a totally subjective list of things I like and things I don't, or just ignore. And who reads blogs for totally unsupported, utterly uninformed opinions?

Sorry, forgot me meds this morning. The doctor said I shouldn't double-up later in the day to make up for it.
