To the wall
Saw a preview last night for Radio, which apparently features Cuba Gooding Jr. as the Magical Nigger du Jour.
Who keeps green lighting these things? Because it's almost to the point of being a fucking genre. . .
Apropos of nothing, really, notcoming.com - The Controversy of Race in Spike Lee's Bamboozled:
Lee's satire envelops a larger scope, as collective black pop culture is also targeted in Bamboozled. Commenting on the current trends in motion pictures, Lee cites the "Super Magical Nigger," exampling "The Green Mile" and "The Legend of Bagger Vance" as support. These "Super Magical Niggers use magic to help white people but can't help themselves." Later, in a dream sequence, Delacroix wins an award for the show and proceeds to do a dance on stage, a parody of Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s dance after his famous Academy Award win for Jerry Maguire. Lee addresses blacks in entertainment in general by saying, "It's the same bullshit. They bring us back, dress us up differently. Same old, same old. Like we made progress. Everything's alright."
Well, I suppose it's wrong to judge the film just from the previews. I'm sure it will defy my incredibly low expectations, and be all heartwarming and shit.
Yep.

SOOOO glad I wasn't the only one to find the previews highly icky.
Anybody else noted that the magical Black men in these films also tend to be MR/DD (as in both Radio and The Green Mile?)
Wimminadnminorities: they're so terribly limited in higher logical function, but you have to sort of like their mystical and simplistic way of being in tune with nature, the univere, etc. Just like children, right?
To borrow from the ever-elequent Hanne:
What fucknuggets.

Hey. I just came by to see if you had a photo of the Dali Lama and Sharpton. You didn’t; what a pity. I am not a Negro nor have I ever been a member of the Negro party, but I do think that there have been many magical simpleton type movies in the past. It is a common theme. Forrest Gump comes to mind but there are many others. It seems that you are not happy with Cuba's choice of parts. Maybe they are not Negro(y) enough for you and Spike. If the part went to a white cracker type from Arkansas would you like it more then? We all can hope that the Magical Latino genre is not long in coming so you won't feel so bad. Let's hope that they pick the right kind of Latino Movie Star for the part so we don't have any anti- Porto Rican backlash.
Love ya!
Peace/Holla

wow, kevin. I'm confused by your comment. On the one hand, you seem to be saying something very snide about what Aaron presented in his post...and on the other hand, you close with "love ya" and "peace."
I wonder how you can ever hope to "ensure that all children and youth have a fair and equal opportunity to receive a quality education." when your communication skills are so godawful that they confuse a grown adult.
I'll be sure to let all of my homeschool friends know that Kids Universe is NOT the place to go for clear, well-articulated, and respectful curriculum choices for their children.

Garrity, I was certain Cynthia Fuchs had written extensively about the, ah, genre, but couldn't find anything at her usual digs at PopPolitics. Might could be I'm not looking hard enough.
Kevin, sorry you couldn't find the photo you wanted. According to dalailamanyc.org, Amy Goodman was also present at the event, so maybe the Democracy Now site has something?
Dru, I'm sure Kevin was just upset that I was trying to make something about race that clearly isn't about race. As we ignorant Negroes are wont to do.
Fucknuggets. That Hanne does have a way with words, don't she?

Kevin appears to be one of those pernicious do-gooders who feels he is exempt from conversations about racism because he has done work that "reaches out" to the "disadvantaged."
fucknugget, indeed.

By the way, there's also something to be noted here about how the differently abled are clearly only worth making stories about if they're happy magic differetnly-abled people who are here to Teach Us Something Profound, and thereby perhaps provide the Feelgood Movie of The Year for a lot of people with 'normal' bodies or brains.
Sorry, but that isn't the sort of interaction I've usually noticed. The white mama on the playground the other day, upon being challenged by the presence (note: not the actions) of a differently-abled teen, came over to the one of the only other white mamas (me) in order to share how she was terribly uncomfortable that this person semed to be both unescorted AND near her (the mama's) perfect children; and it took me three strong comments about how the young woman in question seemed in no way potentially harmful or challenging or dangerous to get her to creep sulkily away . . .
I'm sure that bitch just loved _The Other Sister_, when she saw it in the theater. What a great feelgood movie! ANd I'ma lso sure that the other mama there who ahppened to have a daughter with Down's Syndrome must have just loooooved overhearing our conversation.

Hey I just wanted to check back and see if anybody got mad about what I had wrote. Sure enough just as I suspected I am stupid and can not approach the intellect of most of the posters here. So be it. I am glad Cuba can get work. I still think there are a bunch of movies about MR/DD people that have magic powers. I agree that maybe recently there have been more movies of this type about black folks of this type. There have been more parts for black actors of late. Is that bad?
As for the URL I posted with my comment. I am not do gooder but I am a dooer. WTF are you doing? . I think garrity was pretty correct about how people view the disabled.
As for my poor writing style; I went to public school in New Orleans. What is your excuse? I do notice more than a bit of slang and “Street Talk” here so I guess I better get my Cracker as off this site before I get’s lynched
I really wish you some peace.
Posted by: Kevin Watkins at September 29, 2003 05:03 PM
It's funny (well, not FUNNY...I guess that's my STREET SLANG talking) how Kevin equates movies about magical african american men with magical MR people. And doesn't even bat an eye in the process.
Unfortunately, Kevin, I run into a lot of your type in the work that I DOO - I work for a non-profit, and there are all sorts of people who want to see problems perpetuated rather than solved. Otherwise, there'd be no "disadvantaged" kids for you to work with.

Man, life is just unfair for poor whites like Kevin.
Dem negroes should be happy with their magic retard roles. I mean c'mon! White Hollywood is throwing you a bone already!
You're supposed to be happy and love Kevin's ignorance. After all, he is a white man, and you are a lowly Negro, Aaron. I mean, if a black man were stupid and a white man were not, that would be racism, so clearly any criticism of him is just you hatin' Negroes and your nasty black ways.

PS: Is it possible for me to disown my race? Too many racists among white folks for my taste.
Posted by: Kynn Bartlett at September 29, 2003 06:21 PM
Kynn, don't you know race is a construct and really has no bearing. We should see each other as individuals all and not see race.
I know that's what I do.
Like Cuba Gooding Jr. I didn't even know he was black.
Aaaah, Aaron, it's so nice that you're having tourists like Kevin again. I can feel my chops coming back.
Posted by: Jason at September 29, 2003 08:26 PM
OK, who left the freaking door open again?!
Posted by: ronn at September 29, 2003 10:26 PM
Ronn, sorry, I did. I'm testing that "flypaper" theory the warbloggers seemed so fond of, only with tourists.
Jason, you and me both, but I am a bit annoyed that this is what comes from posting more frequently. . .
Kynn, I'd like to say there aren't (proportionately) just as many Negroes I'd rather not be (guilt-by-)associated with on my end, but I'd be lying. 'fraid you're stuck, unless those wacky kids at Race Traitor have some ideas.
