Don't think it's Aimee Mann. . .
Ok, when I downloaded this from Gnutella or whatever, it claimed the file was Ani DiFranco and Aimee Mann covering Prince's When Doves Cry. But I'm not sure about the latter. Definitely Ani, though.
So.
Five meg file, so dialup users maybe wanna ignore this. Anyone else:
Ani-When_Doves_Cry.mp3
Give it a listen and confirm or deny.
Or just give it a listen.
Checked my bandwidth usage, and am wondering why the hell I'm paying for that much when I never use it. . .
Update: Ok, following up on a comment from yvelle, I checked and this song doesn't appear to have been released by RIAA member Righteous Babe Records. Any of the working musicians out there want to tell me who holds the copyright on audience recordings of live performances, assuming that's what this is?
Yeah yeah, information wants to be free. I should'a mentioned that to the sheriff's deputies as they were evicting my dad the trumpet player from our old house.

Doesn't sound like Aimee Mann to me either.
Be careful out there. Ani's label is part of RIAA.

Was this on an album? I figured it was a bootleg/audience recording, and they're not stomping folks for those, are they?
Not that I want to find this out the hard way. . .

It sounds like Aimee to me, what tiny little bit you can hear. It sounds mostly like Ani with the merest hint of backing drone, so really I should say that it doesn't not sound like Aimee. From no more than you can hear, the second voice could be almost anyone.
I googled around and apparently they did do a duet of the song on one or more Lilith Fair dates. Here's a radio station setlist that says they played Ani and Aimee doing the song - http://www.95x.net/res.asp

Thanks, Dave. From what I can tell from the Lilith Fair site, though, Ani never played any.
Curioser and curiouser.

If it's a recording by an audience member there can technically be no copyright UNLESS a contract is made with the artist (and the publishing company and the company's holders - if it's a major act or an act on fronted cash).
If it's not a bootleg, then it depends on the individual contract old man. Depends on the contract.

Aaron, you are right, it isn't Lilith Fair. I conflated two different threads when I was looking that up. I have no idea where it is from. While I can't confirm that it is Aimee Mann on this MP3, it is plausible. They did do the song at at least one concert, and it doesn't sound impossible that Aimee is singing on it. I really can't tell either way from listening to it.

It didn't sound like Aimee Mann to me. But I can't hear as well as I used to.

I have...had a better sounding version. Sounds like Ani only to me. And if it's a fan recording at a concert, wouldn't that be a violation on the part of the concert-goer and still somehow illegal? Though I'm not sure if distributing it free of charge is lawsuit-worthy.

At this point, I'm willing to call it Ani and Miss Sara Lee and be done with it.
Ronn, I take it your version doesn't have credits attached either?
Posted by: Aaron at October 28, 2003 09:11 AM
It was a LimeWire (I think) download, so no credits whatsoever. I deleted it from my iTunes library with other similar tracks.
Altho I may have it under my other profile. I'll see.

Ronn, did you find it?
Think I got it from LimeWire too, since you mentioned it. Guess I could see if the Linux client is still as flaky as I remember. . .
Considering forgetting about getting DSL/cable modem/sleeping satellite (which I do not blame) and just heading to the local WiFi cafe for my high-speed hit. And the closest Starbucks has "free" access, but this would mean a) paying for overpriced coffee and b) paying for Starbucks overpriced coffee. Is escaping dial-up hell worth sacrificing my principles?
Why am I asking you people?
