Perhaps this will reveal something
Other than my taste in music, that is.
A few of the tracks I done got from EMusic since joining:
I Fought In A War, Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant, Belle And SebastianHeartless Moon, Heartless Moon, Brenden Gamble
Nil Se'n La, Clannad In Concert, Clannad
The Host Of Serpahim, A Passage In Time, Dead Can Dance
Gen-X (Shall We Dance?), Piloted By Ghosts, Suede Chain
Ok, it reveals that I went to U of I Shampoo-Banana, yes, but what else?
Update: Oh yeah, and anyone got any recommendations based on that? EMusic is suggesting Mogwai, Apples in Stereo and Guided By Voices, along with a hell of a lot of jazz.
And Bauhaus.
And Slayer.
I'm not sure I like where they're going with that.

Slayer's South of Heaven rules dude! Get that!
Also Mr. Rick and I used to make jokes about Peter Murphy lounging on his death chair eating laxatives and drinking Black lemonade.
Good times....Good times.

This has nothing at all in common with anything you have listed, but I'm totally obsessed with Michael Franti and Spearhead lately. I know I said I'd send you a cd, but in the meantime, you might want to look into getting ahold of anything from the "Stay Human" CD. It is truly invigorating.

"I'm not afraid, ok, maybe just a little bit.."
SO SAD that they split up. That whole albumn's good, though- the bassist sings "Hallelujah," which makes it a bit different & fun: "We're at the Hell's Kitchen, Bar & Grill, Order now, Paaay Later..." fun tune. Same rockabilly-swing action they played w/on Shall We Dance.
Isn't GBV a OH group?
Of -course- you need more Bauhaus. Everyone does. & Legendary Pink Dots. Which is sort of like Bauhaus, but w/more concertinas.
You have DCD & Suede Chain on your list but not The Drovers, the lovechild of the 2 bands? What?
Ok...sorry..again...

okay, aaron name-checks gbv, r@d@r goes straight to heaven.
if you were to say gbv, monks of doom, r.e.m., peter gabriel, the who, yes, and be bop deluxe in the same sentence, i think the universe would explode.
i guess it's not special to live gbv any more. or maybe it is seeing as how they've reached that unenviable "they're not as good as they used to be" stage [not in fact, in commonly-held opinion].
which i guess you could say about r.e.m. as well...
i don't know if i will ever get hip to online music services. maybe when i graduate up from 56k-on-a-good-day dialup. [downloading at work=big no-no]

Cocteau Twins.
Momus (B&S kinda sound like Momus.) Witty, urban, self-obsessed, English as hell.
Massive Attack.

i see your massive attack and raise you a barry adamson!
i see your cocteau twins and raise you a throwing muses! [now i KNOW i'm on aaron's good side...]

"Host of the Seraphim" = most beautiful Dead Can Dance cut ever. I've recently gotten hooked on Mediaeval babes, which are kind of like what would happen if Anonymous 4 got a bunch of their girlfriends together and got good and soused after choir practice, and decided to form a bacchanal band of maenads.
Or something like that...

seeing r@d@r's 'ex-lion tamer' URL reminds me of 2 sweet Wire songs: "The 15th" and "Map Ref. 41°N 93°W"
Am I living in the musical past? The other day, a 20-something responded to my Dinosaur Jr comment, "oh, 90s music..." as though that were in the dim, forgotten past.
Posted by: Dixon at November 14, 2003 08:19 AM
Ok, no idea why that last comment sent me looking for Mahalia Jackson on EMusic (and they gots some, so Woo Hoo!). Something about there not being the same sort of age/popular music thing in the black community. Or something. Not enough coffee.
Thanks for all the suggestions, people.
Liz, just checked (because I remember seeing they were on tour), and Anonymous 4 is playing Columbus, OH on November 29th, Indianapolis the day after that, and Chicago-ish (Glen Ellyn) on January 7th. Seeing as they're calling this their final tour, are they worth seeing live?
Concert schedule, if you're not near any of those places. I'm sure you've mentioned this, but, y'know, mind, sieve, it's sad, really.

Based entirely on nothing you have said:
Japs: DJ Krush, ciba maato (jazz and electronics)
Brits: kill em' all! (really)
Yanks: Gray Boy, Coldcut, DJ Food (loopy electronic jazz)
Canuks: George Leech (blues)
Krauts: Haujabb (spelled kinda like that)
Coldcut especially... they often feature such folks as ciba maato, jello biafra, and iggy pop.
George Leech is Ojibwe - 'Nuff said.

I'm hooked on The Changelings, Faith and the Muse, and Delerium these days.
And I'm in another Poe phase.
Mmm, Poe.

Aaron: Anon 4 are very much worth seeing- they played their Mass of Ste. Ursula at the Basilica up on Hennepin a few years back...
Missed that one, of course, & I'm flying back from Richmond that evening, so will miss the show here...
VA: old Delerium or new? This new albumn worries me lots- what's w/our Frontline?
Posted by: neogrammarian at November 14, 2003 01:44 PM
Whee! They'll also be in Milwaukee. I'm in Madison, WI so either one is about a 2 hours drive. Whether I can afford it? Whole nother question.. damn, I need to get me one of those rich lovers who'll pay my bills.... :P

Neo: I have no idea. I was sent a bundle of mp3s a while back by a friend, and I'm hooooooked.

It's all about Cibo Mato.
Posted by: ronn at November 15, 2003 09:57 PM
Liz, coolness. Oh, go for the ramen-for-a-month option on getting tickets. Think that's what I'll be doing. And did you know Vaartina was playing Madison a day or so back? I am now kicking myself for missing 'em, meaning I'll have to go to Finland to see them live or something. And that's ramen for six months. . .
Ronn, I have their first cd -- or did, at one point -- and my sis has the second. Was Stereo Type A the second/most recent? I should keep better track of these things.
And I would remind readers that I was looking for suggestions for stuff available on EMusic. Guess I should'a been clearer on that point.

yeah, cibo mato. that's what i meant.
