Read A Book (or Two), Hear A Speech (or Two), Get A Clue (or Two!)
Deborah Gray White, 2004 Allison Davis LecturerDeborah Gray White, Professor of History at Rutgers University, earned her Ph.D from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her first book, Ar'n't I a Woman: Female Slaves in the Antebellum South (Norton, 1985, 1999) blends anthropology and history in showing how black women worked to gain rights, hold families together, and resist economic and sexual oppression in the Reconstruction South; it earned Professor White the Letitia Brown Memorial Book Prize. She is also the author of Too Heavy A Load: Black Women in Defense of Themselves: 1894-1994 (Norton, 2000). Her current research examines the significance of the Millenium Marches--especially the Million Man and Women Marches, the Million Mom March and the Promise Keepers--as a way of assessing American race, class, and gender relations at the turn of the 21st century. Professor White will speak at Northwestern University on Monday, October 25, 2004 at 5:00 pm at Harris Hall 107, 1881 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
